West Chesterton councillors have launched a combined website for news and activities from West Chesterton Liberal Democrats. This site will no longer be maintained.
Ian Nimmo-Smith and Max Boyce have backed a scheme to renovate 50m of the total hedge length of 200m adjacent to the College Fields public open space as a trial. The complete scheme would involve removing self-seeded elder over an 8-year period, ‘laying’ the Hawthorn, and making supplementary planting to create a double line of hedging at a cost of £6,000 for the 50m length. Existing Hawthorn would be laid as soon as the new plants were to a height of 1.5m. A consultation with the University and local residents will be carried out. As the elder provides a local source of flowers and berries for various culinary uses, Ian is investigating whether some of the elder could be retained as a community resource.
Yesterday morning (08:10 18 May 2010) I joined Julian Huppert MP, together with county, district and city councillors at the invitation of Cambridge Cycling Campaign.
The purpose was to see at first hand, in the morning peak, the difficulty and danger caused by having cars parked in the ‘advisory’ cycle lanes on either side of the road.
West Chesterton ward councillors have been campaigning for a better provision on the key cycling route at least since 1992 - initially spearheaded by former city councillor Gaynor Griffiths and county councillor Maurice Leeke.
I sincerely hope this time a scheme is agreed and taken forward - for the sake of today’s school children and tomorrow’s commuters from new housing in the northwest fringe sites.
I have recently received the following notification. I have only included the roads in West Chesterton.
“Carriageway Surface Dressing 2010
For your information the following roads within your parish [sic!] will be surface dressed during the forthcoming season.
Gilbert Road
Montague Road
Humberstone Road
Belvoir Road
Manhattan Drive
It is anticipated the programme of work will commence mid June and will take approximately 6 weeks to complete.
As the process is totally weather reliant it is impossible at this stage to give precise dates for each site. However, notices to inform road users of the works will be displayed at each location at least seven days before any work is undertaken.”
